Your reality, or Winter’s?
It must be such a struggle. Whether you’re lonely or struggling to feel good about your work or yourself, or some other problem, the pain feels quite raw and real. It can be hard to reach out for help if others see you as confident, successful or happy, and you or winter or whoever doesn’t want to pop that bubble of misunderstanding. But it’s important to, sometimes.
Merry Christmas. Quite a moving art for me.

Romance doesn’t fix all issues with people, and Winter is a prime example of that. He needed those few weeks in Sanctuary away from everything so he could finally allow himself to finally change for the better. Being mates with Moon (or Qibli because fanon) wouldn’t have been what Winter needed. He just isn’t right for that type of relationship. His heart belongs elsewhere, and I’m sure he’ll find the perfect mate(s) one day. But for right now, he needs to focus on himself so he can at long last turn into the much more generous and compassionate version of himself that was buried beneath his rough exterior whenever he was around the Jade Winglet.
Being separated from everything was the perfect thing for Winter and when re-reappears later on, he is fully changed for the better. I could not be happier for him and how much he’s grown from it!

Poor Winter, going through the books I always felt that out of all the characters he very much got the short end of the stick. Sure later on Snowfall would help make things a bit better, but Winter also seems like the type that would need something to distract him otherwise he might end up brooding/mulling over the events that happened across the books over and over.
The Icewing protagonists and Peril were always my favorite characters in the series because they were all flawed characters, and I always enjoyed whenever they popped up in the books. To me flawed characters are more interesting because of the struggles they deal with on top of whatever the plot is, and it feels more rewarding to see these characters succeed despite being saddled with things like mental blind spots, a broken moral compass, or being a product of a system that may not be all that great.
